Info about our performers:
The kick off to JPEC’s 2013 season was the highly successful “Tapestry, a Musical Landscape” at the Toronto Centre for the Arts.
This musical extravaganza opened with Joe Sealy’s “Africville Stories”, presented by Jackie Richardson (vocals and narration), Joe Sealy (piano), Paul Novotny (bass), Mark Kelso (drums) and John Johnson (sax). This was followed with a celebratory salute to Motown, with an all star slate of musicians under the musical direction of Roberto Occhipinti, including vocalists Alana Bridgewater and Michael Dunston.
In keeping with JPEC’s mandate, the inaugural Lincoln Alexander Scholarship was awarded during the evening to guitarist Sam Dickinson. This award recognizes academic achievement and emerging jazz talent. This scholarship, presented by Marni Beal-Alexander, honours the memory of the late Honourable Lincoln Alexander. “Linc” was a strong supporter of arts and education, and an integral part of JPEC from its' inception.
JPEC also paid tribute to the Honourable Mr. Justice Michael H. Tulloch, who last year was named to the Ontario Court of Appeal – the first African Canadian to serve on any Provincial Court of Appeal.
With the success of this gala and the monies raised, JPEC is able to fund a number of important programs. This includes the promotion of Canadian and International jazz artists through concerts and outreach programs to schools.
Details of these, and other JPEC initiatives, will be provided on this website as they unfold.
